Managing Store Navigation
Learn how to create and manage navigation menus in PlanetShopping so customers can move easily around your online store.
Purpose
Navigation menus help customers move around your online store and find important products, collections, pages and other store content. PlanetShopping lets you create and manage menus from the Merchant Panel, including menus with multiple items and nested menu structures.
Open Navigation
To manage your store menus:
- From the Merchant Panel, go to Online Store → Navigation.
- Review the menus already created for your store.
- Select a menu, such as Main Menu, to edit it, or select Add Menus to create another menu.
The Navigation screen shows each menu and the menu items currently included in it.
Create a menu
To create a new menu:
- Go to Online Store → Navigation.
- Select Add Menus.
- Enter a Title for the menu.
- Review the Handle. A handle is used to reference the menu in the store theme. For example, a menu titled Sidebar menu can use the handle sidebar-menu.
- Under Menu Items, select Add another options.
- Enter a Name for the menu item.
- Use Options to choose the destination for that menu item. Available destination types include Home page, Search, Collections, Products, Pages, Blogs, Blog posts and Others.
- Select Save in the Add Menu Item window.
- Add additional menu items as needed.
- Select Save to create the menu.
Add menu items
Each menu can contain multiple Menu Items. Give each item a clear Name that customers will understand, then use Options to connect it to the appropriate destination. PlanetShopping currently provides destination types for Home page, Search, Collections, Products, Pages, Blogs, Blog posts and Others.
Use concise labels such as Home, Books or Collections when they accurately describe where the link takes the customer.
Edit an existing menu
To edit a menu:
- Go to Online Store → Navigation.
- Select the menu you want to change.
- Edit the menu Title when needed.
- Use the edit icon beside an existing Menu Item to change its Name or destination.
- In the Edit Menu Item window, select the destination under Options and then select Apply Changes.
- Use Add another options to add another Menu Item.
- Select Update when you have finished making changes.
Reorder menu items
Existing Menu Items include drag handles. Use these to change the order in which the items appear in the menu, then select Update to save the revised menu.
Remove menu items
Use the delete icon beside a Menu Item when you want to remove that item from the menu. Review the remaining navigation structure and select Update to save your changes.
Delete a menu
Open the menu you want to remove and select Delete. Make sure the menu is no longer needed by your storefront before deleting it.
Menu handles
Each menu has a Handle. PlanetShopping uses the handle to reference the menu in the store theme. Handles are typically based on the menu title, using a format such as main-menu or sidebar-menu.
For most day-to-day navigation management, focus on giving the menu a clear title and organising its Menu Items correctly.
Nested and drop-down menus
PlanetShopping navigation can be used to organise menus into nested structures, allowing related destinations to be grouped together for easier customer navigation. Use this when a store has several related links that are clearer when grouped under a broader menu heading.
Plan your store navigation
Good navigation should make the most important parts of your store easy to reach. Keep the structure straightforward and use labels customers can immediately understand.
Depending on your store, key navigation destinations might include your homepage, important product or collection areas, informational pages and other content customers frequently need.
Tips for effective navigation
- Keep menu labels short and descriptive.
- Put the most important customer destinations in prominent positions.
- Group related links together where it improves clarity.
- Avoid creating unnecessarily complicated menu structures.
- Check the order of menu items after making changes.
- Review your storefront after updating navigation to make sure the customer journey is clear.
