As a consequence merchants that offer real time transaction processing will process shoppers credit cards and provide verification to them within 20 seconds of acceptance.

Secure Socket Layers (SSL)is probably the most popular form of security on the Internet. SSL employs public key cryptographic technology from RSA Data Security, an established leader in computer data security, and works with various encryption algorithms. Simply put, this type of encryption scrambles credit card numbers so that it is rendered useless to computer hackers. The US Government uses RSA technology, so it must be safe!
